lense advice

As a completely non technical amateur I request advice on the choice of a lense. I have EOS5D and three canon lenses, the wide angle 35mm f1.4L USM , a decent portrait lense and a macro. My subjects are chiefly portraits and landscape, some architectural and the three lenses serve me very well.

However I need to add one lense, as the wide angle places my subjects 'too far away' and not sufficiently detailed. I need to get in closer, the building, the boat on the lake, or the distant mountain. So i'm guessing i need a zoom, but have no idea from the baffling choice. I'm reading 70-200 f4.0, or the 24-1054L, but don't really know.

Since you seem to have the wideangle and normal range covered, I'd say the EF 70-200/4L USM would be the better choice, and it gives you more telephoto reach. It's a very good, very sharp lens. The Image Stabilized version is even better if you can afford it.
