Between a canon 16-35 USM 2.8 L (I or II not sure there's much diff) and the 15-55 2.8 IS USM L which would you pick if they both cost the same? Like for example you were able to pick up an the older 16-35L, the I not the II, used.

Also you'd be using it on a 40d or 7d for at least the next year or two.

I'd go for the EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS.

It has image stabilization and a wider zoom range and normally it's about $400 cheaper then the EF 16-35/2.8L II . If you buy a full frame DSLR in a couple of years you'll aways have the option of selling it (thiough you may find you don't want to!).
